Chrissy Teigen reveals battle with postnatal depression

Model mum Chrissy Teigen has revealed her ongoing battle with postnatal depression following the birth of her first child, Luna, in April 2016.


Never one to shy away from voicing her opinion (Chrissy is adored for her witty tweets and retaliations with Donald Trump), the Sports Illustrated star took a no-holds-barred and honest approach to her postnatal reveal. “I’ve been a chronic oversharer since birth. So I decided I’d talk about something no one really knows about me, mainly because I just learned it myself.”Penning a ‘raw and real as ever’ essay in the April issue of Glamour Magazine, the 31-year-old confessed that despite her seemingly happy life with baby Luna and husband John Legend, she has been fighting a private battle with postnatal depression.
The star confessed that since the birth of her 'perfect' daughter she had felt unhappy. “What everyone around me—but me—knew up until December was this: I have postpartum depression.”

When returning to her hosting job on Lip Sync Battle four months after the birth of her daughter, Chrissy admitted she was different that before. “Getting out of bed to get to set on time was painful. My lower back throbbed; my shoulders—even my wrists—hurt. I didn’t have an appetite. I would go two days without a bite of food, and you know how big of a deal food is for me. One thing that really got me was just how short I was with people."
Blaming it on being tired and growing out of the role, Chrissy had trouble figuring out why she was so unhappy at the time, withdrawing from people and events. “I never left the house. I mean never.”
She continued: "I wouldn’t have to go upstairs when John went to work. There was a lot of spontaneous crying.”


Chrissy was diagnosed with postnatal depression and anxiety in December after she visited her GP for a physical, alongside her supportive husband, John. She is now taking antidepressants and attending therapy sessions, which she admits helps.
Speaking up to assuage the postnatal depression stigma, Chrissy said she doesn’t want other mums to feel embarrassed or lonely through their battle.
“One thing I do know is that—for me—just merely being open about it helps,” she adds. “This has become my open letter.”
