This isn't John's directorial debut, as The Office actor has also directed The Hollars and Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. Michael Bay is confirmed as a co-producer along with Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. According to sources for Variety, John and Emily decided to make the film together after reading the script, despite usually keeping their personal and work lives separate. However, the Girl on the Train actress has admitted that her husband is a huge fan of her work. Chatting on the Jonathan Ross Showshe said: "He had rather embarrassingly seen The Devil Wears Prada about 72 times… I remember when we first started dating, I was coming home from something and I walked through the door and he quickly changed the channel because he was watching it again. He knew Anne Hathaway's favourite outfit and the montage of outfits. [He is a] die hard [fan]."

The pair share two daughters, and John previously opened up on how having children affected his work in The Hollars. He told ET: "We started shooting the movie when my daughter was four-and-half-months-old, and I've got to say that, had I shot this five months before, that it would have been a totally different movie. All the clichés of parenting are true and you feel all sort of new things. It was really this new existential magnet that you feel draw to your family… and you understand your parents more, you understand your brothers' relationships more, you understand even your family's name. That you are from somewhere."
